2614. Edward Griswold

History of Edward Griswold in The Griswold Family pp. 11-14. From p. 13 it states " Edward died in 1690 in his 84th year, his burial place being unknown, except it may be in the vacant space next to that of Margaret. Based on additional research, the order of birth and number of children of Edw. and Marg. have been revised from that given in the earlier Griswold family genealogy. Kenilworth Parish Register entries show 4 children baptized there of which Lydia is the only one who did not come to this country, indicating she died as an infant in Eng. The first John died in 1642 in windsor, CT. The Kenilworth Parish Reg. begins with the year 1630 so no baptismal record has been found for Francis who was undoubtedly the oldest child, born about 1629 to have been married abt. 1652 at approx. 23 yrs. of age. Sarah bp. Jan 29, 1631/2 in Kenilworth is the logical one to have married in 1650. Savage's Gen. Dict. and the Kinilworth Parish Rec. refer to only one Sarah, born in Eng. who came to Windsor with her parents in 1639. She would have been 18 yr. of age at the time of her marraige in 1650, not 15 nor 12 as has been previously asserted." Many references given.

Savage - Edward, Windsor, b. at Kenilworth in Warwicksh. 1607 as tradit. says, came, it is always said, with Rev. Ephraim Huit, tho. it is certain wrong, for his s. George testif. that he was b. 1638 and "liv. in his youthful yrs." with his father and uncle Matthew at Kenilworth, Eng. Bef. com. to W. he had Francis, George, John, and Sarah, prob. all b. in Eng. and he had at Windsor, Ann, b. 19 Jun 1642, in wh. yr. John d. there; Mary, bapt. 13 Oct 1644; Deborah, 28Jun1646; Joseph b. 12 Mar 1648; Samuel bapt. 18 Nov 1649; John again 1 Aug 1652; rem a 1664 to Killingworth, so named acc. the com. pronunciat. at his native place. He was rep 1658-61 for W. and often for K. His s. Francis and br. Matthew as well as himself were reps in one court. His s. Samuel d 1673 and he d. 1691. Sarah m. 1650 Samuel PHELPS.

2615. Margaret HICKS

In 5 different IGI88 birth recs. of Hannah, Marg. HICKS given as mother in one, Marg. DIAMOND in another, and no one in the other 3. In The Griswold Family, it states Marg.'s surname is unknown. HICKS needs to be checked out before being listed as her name. Clinton was originally Killingworth, CT. Margaret's gravestone is marked "M. G. 1670" and is the oldest stone in the cemetary behind the Congregational Church in Clinton. However, ti does not show the patient devotion nor the hardship endured in rearing her family in that vast wilderness." See more of her history in The Griswold Family p. 11-12

2648. William Thomas

IGI88 record of birth matches closely. Savage - William, Marshfield, a. 1640, made freem. of the Col. 17 Mar 1642, had come, I think, with Rev. Richard BLINIMAN, Hugh CAULKINS, and other pious persons from the princip. of Wales, or the W. of Eng. not in 1630, as FARMER had it, and Miss THOMAS repeats, merely, I suppose out of reverence for the inscr. on the gr.st. call. him "one of the founders of New Plymouth Col." as if a man of his reputa. and import. would not many yrs. earlier be made freem. of mortuary legends applied in a subseq. age were not proverbial for lack of percision. He was chos. Assist. 1642, and so contin. exc. in 1645 and 6 o his last yr. d. Aug 1651, aged 78 nearly. His will of 9 Jul preced. is abstr. n Geneal. Reg.IV.319.

2660. John CUTLER

Savage - John, Hingham, came in 1637, with w. seven ch. and one serv. from some part of Norfolk, Eng. and d. I suppose, a. 1671, for next yr. his wid. Mary, then bec. HEWIT, join. with s. Nathaniel of Reading, Samuel of Topsfield, and Thomas of Charlestown, in sale of the est. at H. Crane - John CUTLER, the immigrant ....., came originally from Sprowston, now Sprauston, two miles north of Norwich and eight miles south of Hingham, county Norfolk, Eng. He came to Hingham in New England probably on the ship Rose of Yarmouth, William ANDREWS, master, which sailed 18APR1636. His home lot was assigned to him in Hingham, 10JUN1637. It consisted of five acres on the south side of Town street. He had also two planting lots of six or seven acres, bounded on one side by the World's End, and twenty acres on the plain for 'a great Lot.' He had other grants as well. With him came his wife Mary, seven children and a servant. CUTLER died in Hingham about a year after he came over, leaving 6 or 7 young ch. His sons were prob. cared for by Deacon Robert CUTLER, of Charlestown, coubtless a relative. His widow married Thomas HEWETT, of Hingham. The children of John and Mary CUTLER were: Henry, died before 1670; John, Jr., born 1625 in Eng.; Samuel, born 1629, died 1700; Nathaniel, born in Eng. 1630, died 1724, aged ninety-four years; Thomas, born in Eng. about 1633; Hannah, born in Eng., married, 6NOV1654, Onesidiferous MARSH.
